Bernie Sanders has long been a socialist. And that suits the people of Vermont just fine. But when you try to put his theories of government into action, it runs into a brick wall…much like Rand Paul’s Libertarian model does. They just don’t work.
Sanders made it a point during the Democrats’ debate the other night of comparing his ideal government with the “Nordic model of socialism”, like Denmark, Sweden, and Norway. Well, let’s take a look at what’s happening there, shall we?
In Denmark, where by the way, they have 60 times FEWER people than we do, they have cradle to grave social programs that take care of sick days, healthcare, and free college tuition. They also have a top tax bracket of 55% or more. Want to buy a new car in Denmark? Their Value Added Tax on cars is 180% of the sticker price. And to put gas in the tank of that new car, will cost you just under $6.50 a gallon. So how do they do it? They do it with a very low corporate income tax, something that Sanders seems to want to shun.
What Sanders fails to realize is that not everything is so great in Denmark. he crows about their healthcare programs and the fact that they have mandatory federally paid sick days. When he fails to mention is the younger generation isn’t quite so quick to undertake the hard work ethic that has characterized the Danes for years. In fact, government officials in Denmark point out that with those 18-24 years old, they seem to get sick an awful lot…taking advantage of the liberal sick day policy…mostly on Fridays.
I’m not convinced that any government model is the ideal model everywhere. But when you look at what you get for what you pay for, I’d rather stick with what I have, thank you. I’d rather take my old healthcare, that allowed me to pay a co-pay and the insurance company would take care of the rest. I’d rather that if you are 25 years old, and don’t want to have healthcare, that is your right. And if hospitals have to foot the bill for the indigent that need emergency care, well, you know something? Those big hospitals seem to cost a lot of money to build, and the healthcare companies that are paying for them aren’t screaming for money, are they?
No…Bernie may want the frosting from Nordic socialism, but I think most Americans, when they are faced with the realism of what they actually will have to pay, and the fact that it’s not going to be just the 1% that Bernie is talking about that have to pay it, they’ll start singing a different tune. Those folks ought to be happy that they are part of the 47% of Americans that don’t have to pay any taxes at all…because under Bernie’s plan, that will go away. Oops. Did I spoil something? Bernie didn’t mention that part of it did he?
Carry on world, you’re dismissed!
