I was watching the news the other day and it hit me why we seem to be besieged with all of this violence lately. Oh, believe me, I WANT to blame the Obama administration and more of their failed politics and policies. I want to, but I can’t this time. They have nothing to do with it.
It has to do with my former profession. It’s the media’s fault.
Yes, the media are to blame for the uptick in shootings, mass shootings, bombings, alligator attacks at Disney World, the whole schmear. Let me explain.
When cable news first became popular back in the first Gulf War (1990), CNN rose to prominence. It launched the career of people like Wolf Blitzer and Arthur Kent…better known as the “Scud Stud”. At once, there was this news channel that did nothing but cover breaking news. Now, don’t get me wrong, and yes, I remember my history. When the first Gulf War started in 1990, CNN was almost 10 years old having started in July of 1980. But they weren’t really a force until they covered the Gulf War blow by blow. It was history’s first play-by-play of a war, and it changed the way we viewed news ever since.
It was fine while there was a war going on and you could embed a reporter with troops, send them out to battle and watch it live. It’s quite another when not much is going on and you still have 24 hours of news to fill. And that became the problem. All of a sudden, every single shooting, every single alligator attack, every single crime became a breaking story. And all of a sudden, every sicko out there that wanted their 15 minutes of fame realized that if they were to just go out and commit murder…or in their eyes, better yet…mass murder…they’d get the fame they were seeking. And that’s where we are today.
Look at the political race for president. There’s absolutely nothing going on right now. Hillary and Donald are out campaigning, saying exactly the same stuff they’ve said for the past year. They’re raising money, and getting ready for their conventions, and in Hillary’s case, hoping to God that she’s not indicted for crimes against humanity. But you still hear about them on every single cable newscast. Why? They have time to fill. It’s that simple. You don’t want to look at a news anchor staring back at you for 10 minutes while news breaks somewhere in the world…they’ve got to be saying something all the time. That’s why you have this outbreak of plane crashes and murder. It’s not that it’s happening any more frequently necessarily. It’s that you’re hearing about it. It’s that it’s being covered wall to wall. It’s that not a moment goes by that you’re not being bombarded with the latest “exclusive” from one news channel or another. It’s not a gun control issue. It’s a media issue. Stop covering this stuff like it’s some sick carnival attraction and it will indeed go away. Trust me…as a former member of the media…I know.
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
