The New York Times at one point in time, for a very long time was the Grand Old Lady when it came to journalism in this country. Every single news media outlet would wait to see what the Times had said was news on that day. In fact, their slogan at one point was, “All The News That’s Fit To Print”. My how times have changed!
I spent my career in the media, as most of you know. I wasn’t in the news side of things, but I understood that side, and relished the responsibility that people on that side had to the public. And what I saw during this election was incredible. Never in my life have I seen a group such as the main stream media in the tank for a candidate like I did this year. And leading the way, was the New York Times. They violated every single tenet in responsible journalism, from giving Hillary Clinton editorial review on stories before they were published, to slanting the news against Donald Trump in order to get Clinton elected. And the rest of the nabobs followed suit like a bunch of lemmings.
It didn’t work. None of it did.
Now the Times realizes that it needs to do something different. So it’s publisher, Arthur “Pinch” Sulzberger Jr. went out and wrote an open letter to the masses that still read the NYT (which is dwindling, like every single newspaper in America), saying that they’re glad the election is over, and they are going to rededicate themselves to this remarkable thing called journalism. Well, to be honest they had to. They knew that Donald Trump was going to pull their credentials to the White House if they didn’t. And if they don’t straighten up and act as something more than a liberal mouthpiece for George Soros, they probably will still get their credentials pulled.
That’s the thing I find so amazing about our media today. These people being cranked out of J-Schools from Northwestern, to Missouri, to Ohio University, to Syracuse all have the same agenda…they want to “change the world” and do so through journalism. They somehow forgot their job isn’t to change the world…it’s to report on the happenings of the world. That’s it. There isn’t any “change” unless they need more memory in their computer, or more ink for their printers. It’s that particular lack of depth that is frightening. And I must say, I’m very happy, just for that reason, that America stood up and slapped down the media, from Scott Pelley to Jon Stewart, and told them, “We are not letting YOU pick our president!”
So as we move forward, into a more moderate (but not conservative) period in our history, let us wait and see if the media follows suit, or if they are going to be like the media that covered Ronald Reagan and George HW and George W Bush. Those folks never learned their lessons. They suffered for it. Let’s see if these “journalists” can rededicate themselves to telling the truth and not spinning it to fit their political agendas. Let’s see if they can remember the word “objectivity”.
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
