“The Wall” has been a hot topic of conversation for a LONG time. Of course, that’s the wall on the southern border of the country that if Donald Trump has his way will stretch from San Diego to McAllen, Texas. Anybody that’s been to the southern border will tell you the terrain, the cities, the countless miles of emptiness backed up to urban centers like San Diego, Yuma, El Paso, and McAllen and Brownsville, Texas are diverse as can be. I’ve been through El Paso a few years back when the team I was covering played at game at UTEP. “The Wall” is a fence on the north side of the Rio Grande (which was neither a river, nor grand…but you could see where a river COULD be!). We watched as we drove by in the team bus, as people scurried over the wall day and night. And yes, there were border patrol agents arresting people…but not everybody.
So, the question on everybody’s mind is, who is going to pay for the wall? Trump insists the Mexicans are going to pay for it. Now that means they aren’t cutting a check. They’ll pay for it in crossing fees, or taxes on exports to the US or other stuff (and if it’s taxes on exports to the US, you know that gets passed on to you and me, right?). It was such as contentious issue that Enrique Nieto Pena, Mexico’s president, decided to cancel his meeting with Donald Trump over it. But the two sides kissed and made up over the phone.
What they DID decide to do last week was to publicly stop talking about who’s going to pay for the wall. I’m sure that was Nieto Pena’s suggestion, and Trump agreed to it. After all, every time Trump said something along the lines of “Mexico IS going to pay for the wall”, the Mexican people just about rioted. I can understand that. And Trump doesn’t need to say that. Frankly, the US probably SHOULD pay for the wall. After all, it’s OUR border. And in the scheme of things, $15 Billion seems like a drop in the bucket compared to the money we’ve spent on illegal aliens over the past three decades.
I frankly would be happy to see the US pay for the wall. I think that’s money well spent. Build it high, build it deep, build it with a buffer in between so there is a “no-man’s-land” where people can’t come in simply by crossing a fence or tunneling underneath it, and I’m happy! Then protect the border. If that means guards every 500 feet, so be it. It’s worth it. We need to stop the flow of illegals into this country. A country without secure borders is a land mass, not a country. We are NOT a land mass. And I don’t care who in hell pays for it. Get it built!
Then we can turn our attention to the people that are already here and have the debate about what we are going to do about them. That is the part of the problem that is going to be difficult…it shouldn’t be who is going to pay for the damn wall!
Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
