Well, What Would You Expect?

I have this pet peeve. I see it happen all of the time. The United States is at odds with some country in the world…let’s say it’s some place like Iran. And then a few days later, we hear on the news how the Iranian government has arrested an American citizen for espionage or some other “crime against the state”. And I shake my head and wonder just how stupid that person had to be. Why in God’s name would you even consider being in a country like that if you even THOUGHT there was a possibility of them going rogue and arresting you for spying on them?

That happened again in North Korea. In fact, it’s happened three times in North Korea recently. And apparently from what I’m seeing all three people were working at the Pyongyang University of Science and Technology (PUST). Now, it looks by their names that all three were Korean of some sort, but were US citizens. And my question would be rather simple…what in hell were you doing in North Korea?

I can expect it from a journalist who is there covering some parade (as happened a couple weeks ago), and they get detained because you know…journalists are great targets for this sort of thing. But if you were actually working at a university in a country like the DPRK, did it not ever enter your mind that you could, just maybe, be picked up and arrested if relations between our two countries went south? Really?

So now the question is, what do we do in this case? Do we throw caution to the wind and go in and try to rescue them? Do we try to negotiate with terrorists and get them out that way? I mean that was tried with Beau Bergdahl and look what it got us…we got a deserter back who’s now facing court martial, and the other side got five Taliban leaders back that were freed from Guantanamo. Yeah…that worked out really well, didn’t it?

Actually, what we should do is nothing. If these guys were working in North Korea doing anything for a country that we have claimed is one of the “Big Three” enemies of this United States, they are on their own. Oh, I’m sure they’re going to claim humanitarian reasons why they are there, but if they are aiding and abetting the enemy in any way shape or form, they are asking for whatever punishment North Korea decides to dish out.

Let it be a lesson to the rest of us. There are certain places in this world that quite frankly you are a damned fool if you try to visit. Iran is one of them. So is Afghanistan. I’d throw Venezuela into that mix right now. In fact, I wouldn’t be too keen to cross the border to the south of me right at this point in time. But if you want to risk it all for whatever reason you’ve got stuck in your brain, well…you’re on your own!

Carry on world…you’re dismissed!
